Star of the Blue Ridge Contest Update

The New River Valley Fair is pleased to announce the return of the innovative and exciting contest that is designed to find the Star of the Blue Ridge. Star of the Blue Ridge is a free contest open to the general public that’s goal is to find the most talented solo singer in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Due to the world’s fascination with home-grown talent, we feel that this area has fertile soil to grow such talent, because of this we are producing our own contest to find the talented voices that reside in our region.

Demolition Derby

July 30, 2007
7:30 pm

Demolition DerbyThe New River Valley is seeking brave men and women to compete in a Demolition Derby on Monday, July 31st 2006. The cash prizes and trophies will be awarded to the winner.

Demolition Derby’s are the fastest growing spectator sport in American today. Daring drivers battle to the finish to see who can deliberately destroy all the other cars. The last car running is declared the winner.

Safety precautions will be taken to protect the spectators. The drivers will be risking their lives to survive the motorized mayhem and collect the big cash purse.
A majority of the competitors will be from this area. Many of the drivers are gathering a large following of fans to cheer them on to victory.

Demolition Derby’s have been featured on television and in sports magazines. The New River Valley Fair will stage the only one in this area this season.  The crashing and smashing gets under way at the New River Valley Fairgrounds. We’ll see you there!

Decemberadio

Anyone who questioned for one second if the heart of rock n’ roll was still beating -under Christian music contexts or otherwise- must not have heard the rollicking romps found within the national debut of DecembeRadio. The recent signees to Slanted Records are just about the most electrified, raucous and riff driven foursome to come about since the original wave of classic rock and are also armed with a message of eternal importance. It’s a lethal combination indeed, one that’s earned the group comparisons to the likes of legends including Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin and Lynyrd Skynyrd right up through vintage influenced innovators like The Black Crowes, Lenny Kravitz and Jet in addition to more modern/progressive rocksters Porcupine Tree and Audioslave.

Horse Pull

July 31, 2007
6:30 pm

Horse PullIn the early 1900’s when farmers farmed with horses, can’t you just visualize a farmer telling his neighbor. “I bet my horse can pull more than yours can”. Then to prove it, the neighbor would take him up on that bet and soon there would be some competition between several farmers.

Horsepulling has come quite far from the early 1900’s. Although the Amish use horses to do their field work, those horses who labor on the farm for many hours a day usually don’t end up in the Pulling Arena on the week-end. The few farmers that use their pulling stock to haul manure, mow hay or cut hay, do not do this on a consistent basis.

So, the Sport of Horsepulling is exactly THAT. It is a sport with a team of equine athletes. The work that goes into them to get ready for competition is endless.

Rodney Atkins

Rodney Atkins

Rodney Atkins had delivered a world-class release with Honesty back in 2003, but even then he was searching for something that would bring his music home to his heart and his memory and his love for the people and the values that guide his life.

That’s what makes his new project different. The voice is still there, deep and strong, a little rough to the touch, like a fence in a field, but also tender and simmering with quiet feeling. It’s a voice that’s lived a bit since we last heard it. That difference can be heard on the new album’s first single, “If You’re Going Through Hell (Before The Devil Even Knows)”.

“When I heard the single, I loved it. It makes a powerful statement. But I had to think, ‘Okay, would I sing this song?’” This question led to songs that meet the same musical standards as the ones set by Honesty and yet come even closer to the kind of man Rodney has always been.

Jason Michael Carroll

Jason Michael Carroll

Jason Michael Carroll doesn’t look like he sounds – and that intrigue only heightens both realities of the tangy vocalist from North Carolina. After all, to hear him is to hear a straight-up, full-tilt, no-frills country singer who works a groove like a mule team, a melody like a barrel racer going for time, and a tear jerker with the dignity of Sunday grace.

But to look at the rangy 28-year-old is to see a twinkle in the eye of a kid who could be just as at home on a surf or skateboard, a bit of mischief and kicked-back cool that says suburban sprawl and good times found where they fall.
